Sydney - Mardi Gras!

Sunday 25 May 2014

One of the biggest celebrations happens every year in Sydney, the one and only Mardi Gras. A fabulous street parade, full of colour, music, dancing, costumes and decorated floats. All in the name of acceptance. Acceptance for everyone, no matter their sexual preferences. In the past this parade was started as a political protest, and it still is today with some of the floats making fun of anti-gay political leaders like Putin.

This year on 1st March the famous parade kicked off down Oxford Street, and I went along with Julia and some German girls from her hostel. The atmosphere was incredible, and everyone was having a good time. The effort some people had gone to was amazing, and thankfully we had managed to grab our space early as it became very busy and crowded.

Despite it being a bit squashed and the parade taking a while to start, there were some warm up acts along the way, and the Mardi Gras Helpers helped to keep the spirit alive. We were handed out everything from Mardi Gras beads, to promotions. I had bought some glow sticks for later on too.

The parade does not officially start until the Dykes on Bikes do their leg of the route.

And then the party starts, with float after float. Almost like the Notting Hill Carnival.

I loved the Dr Who themed part of the parade.

It all moved so quickly, my camera couldn't quite capture some of the outfits and I don't think I managed to capture how wonderful the whole thing was. I will never forget this event. So much love, celebration and acceptance, no matter who you are!
