Fàilte

Saturday 5 October 2013

Fàilte means welcome in Scottish. That's as far as I go with my national language unfortunately...

As the description says, recent events have made me re-evaluate the direction of my life. Having lived in London for the past three and a half years, I was made redundant from my job about a month ago. Normally circumstances like that would send me into complete panic, but to tell the truth, it couldn't have come at a better time.

I have a sort of marmite relationship with London. I love that it is so multicultural, vibrant and variable. There is always something to do, see, drink or eat. I would never have developed my love for Turkish, Vietnamese and of course Sushi cuisine if I had stayed at home. London is a mixture of villages, each with it's own distinct character. It is a real melting pot of activity, and I feel lucky to have been part of that for a short time.

However, I hate that it is dirty, unfriendly at times, stressful, lonely and I can't get a decent glass of tap water down here. Living situations haven't helped my view of the city, nor have some relationships. I feel that I need to leave now, or forever hold a grudge towards it.

Back in 1777, Samuel Johnson wrote,

'When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.'

First of all, I'd like to point out I am a woman. Secondly, London is a tiring city, it's massive! Thirdly, I believe there is more to life than just London. If Mr Johnson could see what opportunities there are to explore the world today, I am sure he would be rethink his statement.

Alas, I am leaving London to travel halfway across the world in the New Year. I am doing this completely on my own. Scary but exciting times ahead! Still in planning mode just now, but you get the jist. :)
